Rev. Richard Mercado, Chairman

  Dick Mercado is the grandson of the founder of the original Mexican Gospel Mission. He graduated from Bob Jones University, and was the third Mercado to serve as pastor of the bilingual church associated with the Mission, Iglesia Evangelica (The Evangelical Church, independent and fundamental). After 9 nine years as senior pastor of the bilingual church, Dick and his wife Joyce and their 4 children answered God's call to plant a new church in the rapidly
growing west valley area of Phoenix, Westpointe Baptist Church. Dick also has a special heart for Christian education. He serves as president of Christian Schools of Arizona and is heavily involved with Mission Christian School, a K-12 ministry located at the mission headquarters.

 Gordon A. Dickson has served as the senior pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Findlay, Ohio, since 1994. He has been married to the former Harriet Clonts since 1981, and they have four children: Stephen 23, David 21, Anna 19, and Joseph 16. David and Anna are presently students at Bob Jones University. After graduating from Pensacola Christian High School in 1974, Pastor Dickson entered Bob Jones University and received the Bachelor of Arts degree in Bible in 1978. In 1979, he graduated from the Camp Directors Institute at The Wilds in Rosman, North Carolina.

From 1979-1984, he served on the staff of Positive Action for Christ (Pro-Teens) in Rocky Mount, North Carolina as a writer and editor. During this time, he wrote several books to assist youth pastors in recreation and teaching. With Dr. Frank Hamrick, he coauthored the Bible study Dynamic Christian Living which is used in Christian schools around the world. In 1984, the Lord called Pastor and Mrs. Dickson to serve with Dr. John Vaughn at Faith Baptist Church in Greenville, South Carolina. Pastor Dickson served as associate pastor for youth and families for ten years. During this time, he was also a regular speaker on the Foundations of Faith radio broadcast and led seven mission teams. He helped to coordinate the construction of the present church auditorium on West Lee Road in Taylors, SC.

In May 2001, Rev. Dickson received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Bob Jones University and earned the Master of Ministry degree from Northland Baptist Bible College. He is periodically taking courses toward the M.Div. degree at Detroit Baptist Theological Seminary.

Pastor Dickson is an adjunct professor in the area of youth ministries at Bob Jones University. He is also the Research Secretary for the Fundamental Baptist Fellowship International (FBFI). Presently, he serves as the Managing Editor for FrontLine magazine, the publication of the FFBI. He writes for various Christian magazines including Today’s Christian Preacher and FrontLine. Since the devastation caused by the recent hurricanes in the Gulf Coast region, Pastor Dickson has acted as a consultant and coordinator for Operation: Renewed Hope. His church has taken regional leadership in sending teams and supplies to the devastated areas.

Rev. Dickson is a regular speaker at Bible conferences, camps, retreats and on the mission field. He is a certified master gardener and his hobbies include reading, writing and fishing.

 

Rev. Johnny Franco Back to the Top

   Pastor Johnny Franco has served as the pastor of Iglesia Bautista de la Fe in Greenville, South Carolina since 1991, evangelizing the lost and
faithfully instructing them in the Scriptures in order to make them disciples of Jesus Christ. He also serves as the head of Instituto Bíblico de la Fe, founded in 1985, and Colegio Universitario Bautista de la Fe, which was established in 2005.

In 2003 Pastor Franco started Música de la Fe, which records conservative sacred music in Spanish. Brother Franco has preached in many places in the United States as well as in Latin America and in the Caribbean. He has received, by the grace of God, an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from the Colegio Universitario Bautista de Puerto Rico.

Pastor Franco and his wife Lizet have eight children and became grandparents in 2006. Those still of school age are being educated in the home.

Dr. John C. Vaughn

Dr. John C. Vaughn has pastored the 1,400-member Faith Baptist Church in Taylors, South Carolina, since 1977. Dr. Vaughn and his wife Brenda are co-authors of More Precious Than Gold: The Fiery Trial of a Family’s Faith. Available in English and Spanish from FrontLine Press, a division of Faith Baptist Church, the book tells the story of a fire in the Vaughn home

in 1978 in which Brenda and daughter Becky were severely burned and the resulting ministries, including Hidden Treasure Christian School, which were founded in 1981. From humble beginnings with 45 members in a small metal building, Faith Baptist Church and Hidden Treasure Christian School now share a 36-acre campus valued in excess of $7 million. A textbook, Special Education: A Biblical Approach, written by the school staff, provides practical help for parents and schools seeking to meet the needs of special students, and families frequently locate to the Greenville area to enroll their special-needs students. Having founded the first Spanish-speaking church in Greenville in 1981, Faith Baptist Church now hosts a Japanese congregation, begun in 1989, and a second Spanish congregation.

Dr. Vaughn is a frequent speaker at camps and conferences and is heard on the daily radio broadcast Foundations of Faith. His sermons are regularly downloaded from www.sermonaudio.com. His articles appear in FrontLine Magazine and other Christian publications. His leadership positions include the following: Chaplain of the Greenville Police Department since 1987, President of the South Carolina Association of Christian Schools from 1988-2005, President of the Fundamental Baptist Fellowship International, and Editor of FrontLine Magazine. Dr. Vaughn founded FrontLine Clubs, a youth discipleship program for Bible-believing churches using uniformed, graded clubs.

Other boards and ministries include the following: Bob Jones University; The Wilds from 1992-2004; International Baptist Missions; Southwest Baptist Missions; Baptist Home Missions; and President of Acts Ministries, a unique outreach training pastors and missionaries in the Spanish West Indies. Dr. Vaughn was appointed to the South Carolina Commission on Disabilities and Special Needs in 2005. Having attended Cumberland College and the University of South Carolina, Dr. Vaughn completed his undergraduate and graduate work at Bob Jones University. In 1989, he received the honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from BJU and will soon complete the Doctor of Pastoral Theology there. The Vaughns have five grown children and six precious grandchildren.

 

Dr. David Shumate, Director Back to the Top

   David Shumate is the General Director of Mission Gospel Ministries, International (formerly Mexican Gospel Mission). He holds a law degree from Harvard (1986), where he and his wife, Linda, accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior. He subsequently received Master of Divinity (1993) and Doctor of Philosophy (2001)degrees from Bob Jones University Seminary. He taught in the School of

Religion and the Seminary at Bob Jones for eight years (five years full time). David and Linda are long-time members of Faith Baptist Church (Dr. John Vaughn, Pastor), where David was an Associate Pastor for fifteen years before moving to Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Shumate has been involved for many years in providing theological training for national pastors, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The Lord has blessed the Shumates with six children (Ruth, Robert, Katherine, Stephen, Mary, and Joanna) who are helping them in the ministry. The Shumate family has a great burden to mobilize churches to reach the Hispanic world for Jesus Christ. The Shumates are currently on deputation for their new ministry.
